Description

"Sexual activity is a cultural practice." I suspect few researchers working in the sexual domain would disagree with the above statement. Yet, I wonder how often those of us who are trained and immersed in predominantly Eurocentric understandings, value systems, and methodologies fully consider its implications for our theorizing, research methodology, or professional practice. How often do we test our theories, or even our concepts, cross-culturally, questioning which elements are universal and which locally specific? How often do we question whether methodologies that have been developed, tested, and used in primarily Eurocentric social and cultural settings produce reliable, valid, or comparable results in other social and cultural settings? How often do we pause to ponder relevance and applicability when invited to send materials we have developed (course guidelines, definitions, conceptualizations, models, methods, measurement instruments, or therapeutic approaches) to organizations or colleagues working in cultures or with population groups far distant or different from our own? From my own experience as a researcher, consultant, and teacher in Canada and several African and Asian countries, I suggest that the answer to all of these questions is, "not often."
